This article is dedicated to a song that, in my opinion, should have received both the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Nobel Peace Prize. It is “Imagine” by John Lennon, which is a poem set to music. As is sometimes the case, a work of art does not need to be long or complex. A one-word title and twenty-six verses make up a masterpiece that conveys the idea of a better world in a simple yet profound way.

The entire song is a hymn to peace and sharing. “Nothing to kill or die for” and “no need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man” were said, in other words, by Jesus, Buddha, and all the great spiritual fathers of various religions. When Lennon writes “and no religion too,” I think he is calling for the absence of religion when it causes discrimination, war, and injustice, and instead invites us to a world based on pure religiosity, which is that of peace. Finally, “imagine all the people sharing all the world” is what allows us to visualize a peaceful and harmonious humanity.

The current reality is very different. At the moment, a few are exploiting the world at the expense of the poorest, and we receive every day news of ongoing wars with possible escalations. Despite this, this song, written in 1971, continues to live on and be studied in schools. This is because, despite reality, each of us feels that “sharing all the world” is the only sustainable path that humanity can take. In my previous article Are we sure that peace is pure utopia? I tried to demonstrate how peace is an evolutionary necessity for humanity. We must learn to live together, just as our cells live together to enable the life of each of us.
