Alberto Maggi and the Pentecost
In the previous article Alberto Maggi and the miracle of the loaves and fishes I had the pleasure of introducing readers to Alberto Maggi, a biblical theologian who accompanies his studies with intense and appreciated work of dissemination through books, interviews, and interesting videos on YouTube.
I listen to Maggi’s words with great pleasure for the following reasons:
- He offers a very concrete interpretation of biblical episodes that is applicable to everyday life, showing us the profound message contained in the events recounted, which goes beyond the actual historical truth of certain details.
- Through Maggi’s words, I often discover similarities with the basic principles of my practice of Soka Gakkai Buddhism. This harmony is subjective, but I like to share the commonalities between two different views at a time when we are constantly stimulated to emphasize differences in race, thought, and religion.
Today we are talking about a very important biblical episode, Pentecost, which 50 days after Easter celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. The event is described in Chapter 2 of the Acts of the Apostles, from which I quote an excerpt:
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly there came a sound from heaven, like a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Tongues of fire appeared and were distributed among them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to express themselves.
As a child, I was struck by the evocative image of the apostles suddenly beginning to speak different languages. Listening to Maggi’s words on YouTube gave me a new understanding of that episode.
The Holy Spirit is the divine force that pervades the universe. Animated by the Holy Spirit, the apostles are able to speak the universal language of love, which can reach all people. The more man is able to love his neighbor, the more he will be animated by the Holy Spirit, thus triggering a virtuous circle. The Holy Spirit is the divine force that pervades the universe. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the apostles are able to speak the universal language of love, which can reach all people. The more man is able to love his neighbor, the more he will be inspired by the Holy Spirit, thus triggering a virtuous circle. As in the case of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, the event is recounted in the Holy Scriptures in language appropriate to the people of the time, but it contains a much deeper message. The phrase “… they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the power to express themselves…” means that speaking and acting in accordance with the Holy Spirit allows us to speak to the heart of every person, to overcome all boundaries, and to achieve the goal of a peaceful and harmonious humanity.
I find a wonderful harmony with the vision of Soka Gakkai Buddhism. From my point of view, the Holy Spirit and the mystic law Nam Myoho Renge Kyo are the same principle. Thoughts, words, and actions in line with the mystic law that permeates the universe allow the individual to realize their full potential to contribute to the creation of a humanity based on respect and peace.
